The healthcare industry is an interdisciplinary service industry. It is the economic activity field in which the society engages in production, management, service provision and information dissemination to maintain and enhance the health of human beings. The author of the sought-after publication The New Wellness Revolution, Paul Zane Pilzer considered the healthcare industry as the fastest growing and most popular industry in the world, after the IT industry. The healthcare industry includes fields such as medicine and hygiene, nutrition and healthcare, and health and leisure. It’s the vital industry that takes the lead in global economic development and people’s welfare in the 21st Century. The scale of the global pharmaceutical market is estimated to reach 1.26 trillion US dollars by 2020. The applied biotechnology market will reach US$314.7 billion and medical equipment US$995 billion. Healthcare Expenditure will reach US$8.7 trillion. (Figures cited from Deloitte Life Sciences & Healthcare Outlook)
As many advanced countries such as the United States, the Nordic countries, Japan, and Taiwan have developed into ageing nations, the demand for geriatric care has grown daily. Furthermore, the rising incomes of middle-class populations in emerging countries such as, Mainland China, India, and Indonesia in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, have continued to increase the demand for global health industry markets in terms of personal health and healthcare prevention expenditures. The advantages of Taiwan in the ICT industry are a solid foundation for the development of medical technology. Today's medical products combined with cloud technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analysis, R&D and production of high-end medical technology products with artificial intelligence, will change the operation models of hospitals around the world and improve the execution efficiency of overall health services and benefits for all people and patients.
