Online taxi service “Yandex.Taxi” have implemented an automated translator into the customer-driver chat; it operates in 95 languages, as is stated in the service’s message.
“Now, drivers will be able to understand their passengers, even if the latter speak in foreign languages. This feature will help communicate with foreign tourists,” — states the message.
Chat with a built-in translation system will soon be implemented in apps “Yandex.Taxi” and “Taxometr” (the latter is an app for drivers) in all countries and cities, where the service operates. It understands texts in Russian, English, French and 92 other languages.
The new chat operates on the platform of Yandex.Translate and is capable of automatically recognizing situations where translation is needed. It accounts for the languages that were selected in the settings by both the customer and the driver and activates the translating feature if the chosen languages are different. This technology allows for texts to be recorded via dictation as opposed to typing — the application turns speech into text and translates if necessary. In this way the driver will be able to focus on the road entirely.
But Uber, another company that Yandex.Taxi merged with, will not be able to use this new technology.
Yandex.Taxi — online taxi service. In February Yandex.Taxi merged with branches of Uber that are active in Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan. In this new company 59.3% is owned by Yandex, 36.9% — Uber, and 3.8% — employees. According to the terms of the agreement, both applications, Yandex.Taxi and Uber, will be available to customers. For working with customers, drivers of both companies have switched to a single platform. The merged company operates in over 600 cities of 12 countries.
