On November 16,2018 the Criterion Collection announced that their film library, previously housed on FilmStruck, will now be found on an independent streaming platform to launch in Spring 2019.  FilmStruck announced in October that it would shut down on 11/29/2018. The announcement of FilmStruck’s closure created anguish for movie lovers who appreciated that the service offered classic films from the TCM and Warner Archives as well as independent and art house films from Criterion Collection. Prior to the creation of FilmStruck, the Criterion Collection was offered as a part of US streaming service Hulu’s subscriptions. Although many in the industry expected that Criterion would return to Hulu or possibly become a part of Netflix, the Collection has opted to create its own platform: The Criterion Channel.

Though the Criterion Collection has a devoted following, the difficulties and expense of converting content to a streaming digital form made it necessary to team with a partner to make the streaming of the Collections catalogue feasible. However, the success of FilmStruck as well as the out cry for it to be saved has convinced the Collection that it is possible to succeed as an independent streaming platform. This also means that the Collection will have more control over their library and can curate and create supplementary content for its subscribers. The Criterion Channel will not launch until after the new year, in the mean time people interested in subscribing can sign up to be a Charter Subscriber.
