【COVID-19】Taiwan's

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it has so far spread globally, with 334,981 confirmed cases and 14,652 deaths announced by the WHO (World Health Organization). Taiwan's epidemic prevention policies and achievements have received worldwide attention and recognition. According to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), there are as many as 234 positive reports on national defense epidemic from the international media. Taiwan’s necessary measures include air and sea border control, restricting exports of masks, pervasive screening, contact tracing, comprehensive testing, and combining the clever use of technology.

Hospitals in Taiwan also play a vital role in epidemic prevention. They have also given full play to the spirit of "Taiwan can help" and shared their valuable experience in epidemic prevention with other countries. For example, the internationally authoritative medical journal "The New England Journal of Medicine" published a paper “*A Locally Transmitted Case of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Taiwan” submitted by Changhua Christian Hospital on February 12th. That is the first academic medicine paper on the treatment of COVID-19 from Taiwan, detailing the case of "asymptomatic human-to-human transmission" of COVID-19. The article is internationally recognized as "very valuable in medical research".

(*The scientific name of the new coronavirus in the title of the paper is "SARS-CoV-2," as determined by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). The new name highlights the relevance of the new virus to SARS.)

Palau recently appeared as a US citizen suspected of being infected with COVID-19. The US embassy and Palau government immediately requested professional rescue from Taiwan. With the help of Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital and Taiwan's epidemic prevention physicians, video screening teaching had been completed. Taiwan's epidemic prevention physicians remotely instructed local doctors on how to take and obtain specimens. After the completion of the examinations, the samples were packaged by the local medical staff and brought back to Taiwan by Taiwanese nursing colleagues. Through detailed inspection by the Kunyang laboratory, the test was determined to be negative. In this regard, Palau President Tommy Remengesau especially thanked Taiwan for its assistance in epidemic prevention.

Besides, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital received a call for help and consultation from Myanmar Hospital on March 10th. Through remote video teaching on March 20th, Huang Jianxian, the director of the infection department of the Hospital, gave 30 medical staff in OSC Hospital of Myanmar advice on the clinical treatment of COVID-19 and guidelines for infection control.
