With the rapid growth of Internet and 5G communication technologies, physical stores and public areas for entertainment and leisure have decreased in popularity and have in turn been increasingly replaced by the “digital home economy.” This includes a growing number of online and mobile applications in products and services in the areas of entertainment, gaming, streaming media, custom-design, home shopping, and a variety of digital content.
Of all the budding technologies influencing the gaming industry, 5G will have the most impact by allowing users to access super-fast Internet. According to a study by Grand View Research, “the global 5G services market size is expected to reach US$41.48 billion in 2020 and US$46.61 billion in 2021.”
To further explore this topic, TAITRA held this year’s International Gaming Forum with a focus on “Finding Opportunities in the Touchless Economy and Its Post-Pandemic Future” on July 3, 2020. Speakers at the panel included Johnny Jan, CEO of Winking Corporation; Hirokazu Hamamura, Vice-President of Japan Esports Union (JeSU); and Kim Eung Won, Brand Manager at SK Telecom Korea.
5G (fifth-generation mobile wireless technology) will significantly change how we consume content on the Internet and benefit the online gaming industry by unlocking new potential in gaming platforms and applications. This new level of network connectivity promises higher speed, responsiveness, and bandwidth as well as lower latency, thus allowing larger volume of data transmission.
Key ways 5G networks will transform gaming include boosting mobile cloud gaming, multiplayer mobile gaming, VR, AR, MR and XR in the gaming industry. 5G will also enable dynamic in-game advertising and streaming, allowing mobile users to play their favorite games without worrying about data caps or short battery life. Most importantly, 5G will drive game developers to create better mobile game apps!
