On top of the many challenges inflicted upon Taiwan’s medical community by the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors operating in the country could not travel abroad to receive surgical training as they had in the past due to the absence of domestic training centers. Amidst this global crisis in which medical practitioners have become the most in-demand essential workers, American surgical technology company Intuitive spotted the advantages of Chung Gung Hospital’s location, advanced equipment and huge volume of surgical operations, and invited the hospital to a crucial collaboration. On June 12, Chang Gung signed a memorandum with the company to bring about Taiwan’s first da Vinci System Training Center, which will begin operations in Linkou by the end of this year.

Jun-De Wu, a recruiter for the hospital’s newly founded da Vinci training program, stated that Intuitive has already dispatched U.S. surgical trainers to assist with crafting the official training curriculum, scheduled to start by the year’s end.

The da Vinci Surgical System was first brought to Taiwan 15 years ago by American clinical robotics company Intuitive, and has grown to become one of the most sought-after advanced medical mechanical systems, known for its minimally invasive procedures and dynamic precision.

There are currently 40 da Vinci Systems housed in 30 hospitals across Taiwan, with around 70 surgeons per year seeking system-skills training. Yet, due to the lack of training centers in Taiwan, doctors have had to travel to the United States, Hong Kong, or South Korea to undergo 3-day intensive training sessions, which include technology usage and simulation, surgical training on animals, and finally shadowing live human operations.

By facilitating more cost-effective domestic training and education with the da Vinci Surgical System, this landmark deal between Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Intuitive galvanizes a more rapid advancement of technological expertise for medical practitioners in Taiwan, allowing patients to receive better quality treatment. Moreover, in attracting overseas medical professionals to train in Taiwan and advancing international relations between medical professionals, this collaboration will elevate Taiwan to an even more formidable standing in the global medical arena.
