Poland was ranked the third largest market for coffee machines in Europe in the first half of 2021, garnering 116.4 million euros, only after Germany of 533 million euros and France of 242.3 million euros, according to GfK data provider. Its coffee machine market is worth some 216 million euros a year, outranking other big European coffee drinkers such as Italy, Spain and Great Britain, the statistics show.
Additionally, sales of the most expensive automatic coffee machines in Poland are second only to Germany. 64.4 percent expenditure on coffee machines in Poland falls on relatively expensive and technologically advanced devices.
BSH Group (distributor of Bosch and Siemens brands) representative Daniel Goszczyński claimed that the growth of his coffee machines’ sales this year was expected to be double-digit, when compared to 2020. It is also worth mentioning that premium-class devices are enjoying increased popularity, and so are the premium coffee beans (21% YoY growth).
The pandemic, extensive home office periods and the inability to visit favourite beverage places had inspired coffee lovers to invest in quality coffee-making environment at home, said Marcin Rybarski from Nestlé. The introduction of partial or complete remote office mode deprived some people of access to the possibility of consuming coffee from freshly ground beans, he added.
Perfect Daily Grind also mentioned that after the outbreak the pandemic, more than 40% of the millennial generation began experimenting with different brewing methods and preparing coffee at home. The home office created an opportunity to work on the technique of making a drink, especially due to availability of various blogs and online resources.
The representative of one of the leading producer of coffee grinders admitted 70% increase of sales since the beginning of pandemic. It was echoed by Przyjaciele Kawy (“Friends of Coffee”, international distributor of coffee beans and devices in Poland), claiming that its annual sales of coffee machines in Poland increased by 50%, with the majority being the automatic coffee machines with an astonishing 294% sales increase.
During the twelve months from September, 2020 to September, 2021, Poles purchased some 700 million euros worth of coffee. The main segments were still ground and instant coffee, but their significance was decreasing compared to coffee beans.
Unfortunately, the pandemic did not translate into falling coffee prices. The effect of reduced demand was mitigated by the growing pessimism in terms of global supply in the 2021/22 season. The negative expectations concerned mainly Brazil, where the production potential has been significantly limited by the long-lasting droughts.
