TAITRA Organizing First Splendid Beauty Forum

To perk up the beauty industry development of Taiwan, enhance the domestic fashion industry competitiveness, and further promote Taiwan to be the economic hub of the Asian beauty industry, this year, under the support of the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and OMC Taiwan Hairdressing & Beauty Association implemented the first Taiwan International Beauty Forum/Workshop/Hair and Makeup Contest at TWTC Exhibition Hall1 for three consecutive days from 16th to 18th November, 2015.  

 
On the morning of 16th November, Mr. Berton B.C. Chiu, Economic Counselor of BOFT, MOEA, Mr. Peter W. J. Huang, President & CEO of TAITRA, and Mr. Te Hsiung Chen, OMC Taiwan President, presided over the opening ceremony. Mr. Peter W. J. Huang, President & CEO of TAITRA, said that they were promoting Taiwan’s beauty industry via organizing exhibition groups, delegations, business seminars, counseling and guidance services, etc. They innovated and planned the first 2015 Taiwan International Beauty Forum, Taiwan International Beauty workshop, and Taiwan Hair & Makeup Contest this year in the hope to boost the development of Taiwan’s beauty industry, synchronizing with global trends and technology, and further enhancing the domestic beauty industry competitiveness to increase export momentum.  
 
International Beauty Forum on 16th November in line with Taiwan’s Beauty Industry with Global Trends
 
Makeup and hairdressing professionals in the beauty industry from all over the world gathered in the said international forum, such as the Foundation Chairman of the Board of Directors of SPC Japan, Mr. Yoshiyuki Yokoyama, who shared the Japanese beauty industry’s market overview and business management. The name SPC derives from “Sunny Passion Chain,” founded in 1966. Mr. Yokoyama established SPC Japan with 7 other partners 50 years ago, and set the goal to enhance the social status of the hairdressing industry, operators’ ability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), while training and cultivating professionals and talents with leadership. It is estimated that over 1,200 business operators in the beauty industry and 15,000 professionals have joined SPC, offering services to over 3 million customers, equipping SPC with strong social influence.    
 
Ms. Young Hee Choi, president of the OMC Korea, shared the Korean beauty market overview and information. She gave strategic advice on how Taiwanese companies can enter the Korean market, how local beauty related educational institutes and companies change according to of social, economic and cultural trends, and the cooperation framework of industry-government-university. This helps Taiwanese companies know how Korea has become the trend setter of the beauty industry, and how to build brand awareness in the highly competitive situation worldwide, which benefits Taiwanese companies to know the past and plan for the future.        
 
The flourishing ASEAN market is a highlight of the world. Mr. CT Chin, the International Brand Builder of CT group of Malaysia, was invited to share the beauty industry trend and brand image of the Malaysian and ASEAN markets. He utilized his overseas studying experience on branding in the United Kingdom, coupled with his related work experience in UK, Hong Kong and Malaysia to bring in his transnational opinions.  
 
For the Taiwan market, President of Hit Hair, Ching-Jan Hsu, who is also the Chairman of the Beauty Business Trade Association of Taipei, Ms. Artemis Tsai, Mr. M.F. Cheng, Ms. Xiufeng Lin were all invited. Ms. Artemis Tsai, is the general manager of the professional beauty product manufacturing group-Shaan Honq Int’l Cosmetics Corporation, whose products are sold in over 42 countries worldwide, and has dominated the beauty industry with fast fashion and innovative services. Mr. M.F. Cheng is the chairman of M.L. Group which owns over 200 salons, and also dabbles in biotechnology and aesthetic medicine industry. Ms. Xiufeng Lin is the CEO of Showlin Salon, which has over 2,000 staff and over 300 branch stores when combined with the secondary brand. All the aforementioned entrepreneurs shared how the beauty industry of Taiwan is geared towards the international conventions, further providing the innovative thinking for facing the opportunities and challenges brought by social change. 
 
Masters Cooperate Transnationally at 2015 Taiwan International Beauty Workshop on 17th November, Demonstrating the Latest Trends
 
The three-person team of Rose Lee, Richard Luo and Ivan Wu, who won the OMC World Championship and other awards multiple times, displayed their award-winning work from over the years, and demonstrated the key skills in the morning for hairdressing. During the afternoon session, Ms. Nanara Berezina, who has 18 golden medals, and OMC Taiwan coaches were invited to demonstrate makeup techniques together. Ms. Nanara Berezina told the students that coloring skills, such as blending and fading techniques, are what the judges value most in the world class competitions, and which are the must-practice for contestants. Regarding the Taiwanese team, head coach Chen, Bo-Shen designed 4 different looks to showcase the makeup and hairdressing trends in 2016. The looks are listed as follows: haircut style made by Jian, Guo-Zhong; an evening gown look for daytime made by Liao, Jia-Ying; an evening gown look for night time made by Wang, Yan-Zhi; and a bridal look made by Zheng, Ya-Wen. Those looks will help students to under
stand that creativity for styling could come from daily life, and the future design trend is high craftsmanship oriented style with practical functions.           
 
Taiwan Hair & Makeup Contest Themed as “Health, Fashion and Environmental Awareness” on 18th November, Cultivating Future Elites 
 
To encourage environmental protection awareness, the Taiwan Hair & Makeup Contest with NTD100,000 in prize money was held on 18th November, and themed as “Health, Fashion and Environmental Awareness” for whole-modeling design. There were 8 award winning pieces from student and professional groups, with 40 contestants in total. The winners included: Tsao, Ju-Wen (Student group) and Hsu, Chiu-I (Professional Group) for the best environmental creativity award; Wu, Ju-Chun (Student Group) and Chen, Chien-Mei( Professional Group) for the best creative design award; Hong, Ya-Ling (Student Group) and Chen, Qing Lun (Professional Group) for the best makeup skill award; You, Pei-Ji (Student group) and Yeh, Chih-Chun (Professional Group) for the best overall image design award. The chief judge, Lin, Ming-Hui, chairman from Department of Cosmetic Science of Vanung University, commented on the award-winning pieces, and stressed that they are “Environmental yet fashionable.” She also spoke highly of the contest for being 
well-executed and planned.
 
According to research data of Euromonitor International, a global survey company, the beauty and cosmetic market worldwide reached a scale of about US$433.36 billion ($433,360,000,000) in 2012. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) was 5% from 2007 to 2012. Skin care products, hair care products, and cosmetics were the primary top three items in terms of sale figures in 2012. They estimated that the scale of global beauty care industry will reach US$562.88 billion (562,880,000,000) in 2017. The global beauty industry is like the rising sun, full of the energy of growth.   
 
In the contract, according to the commerce and service census of Directorate- General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan, Taiwan, the gross output in 2006 for the hairdressing and beauty salon industry combined was NT$49.4 billion (49,400,000,000). It increased to NT$56.7 billion (56,700,000,000) in 2011. People in the beauty industry estimate that the gross output should be over 60 billion (60,000,000,000) NTD for the next census in 2015. Compared to the staggering growth of the beauty industry globally, it is obvious that people in Taiwan’s beauty industry should enhance their international competitiveness. Thus, we should be able to win over business opportunities in the global beauty industry market.    
 
Through the series activities of the international beauty forum, TAITRA established a platform for the beauty industry, exhibiting the fruitful results of Taiwan’s beauty industry development. It also created a bridge between professionals in Taiwan’s beauty industry, the management level and students in beauty related departments, with international professionals, to observe and exchange techniques. We expect this will strengthen the competitiveness of the beauty industry and further boost the momentum of exports.
