「Taiwan
《LUNA》made by「ACORN Studio」successfully attracts people in Malaysia.

Taiwan in Design is a major project organized by TAITRA. The initiative is a design showcase that aims to inspire interest in cultural and business opportunities between Malaysia and Taiwan.

‘Taiwan in Design’ brings together the works of 12 exhibitors, designers and brands in a Taiwanese-design showcase at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia. The showcase focuses on three concepts: ‘Design in Living’, ‘Design in Dining’ and ‘Design in Giving’. Designs on display – from fashion to lifestyle and kitchenware to lighting – reveal how Taiwan has shifted from a post-war manufacturing powerhouse to a design-led culture that produces original and high-value products.

Taiwan’s  history of excellence in manufacturing has made it a leader in new technologies such as VR, AI and robotics, as well as cutting-edge materials, cradle-to-cradle processes, and a range of other industrial design innovations.

The products being exhibited at ‘Taiwan in Design’ are superb and have all been awarded either an IF, Red Dot or Good Design international design award. Some also won Red Dot's design for trendy products and subsequently entered the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore. The main entrance at Taiwan in Design is donned with a giant, bright moon from Taiwan’s LUNA design. The Expo is bringing the moon that shines over Taiwan to Kuala Lumpur and creating Malaysia's most beautiful scenery at the Taiwan Expo.

60% of Malaysia’s population is Muslim. This is a major incentive for Taiwanese entrepreneurs to understand the cultural differences and product design for the Muslim market. In addition, there are about 26 million tourists in Malaysia, ranking 14th in the world. Malaysia’s main source of tourism comes from other Southeast Asian countries, mainland China and the Middle East, which also have Muslim cultures. Gifts and souvenirs are in great demand; however, the acceptable retail price of gifts in the Malaysian market is about RM100 (about NT$700), and the motivation to purchase is the most important consideration. The price of Taiwanese cultural and creative products remains slightly high. For example, if Taiwanese companies are interested in entering the market, they will have to adjust the pricing or product line according to local consumption capacities.

Malaysia is the third-largest economy in ASEAN, with a GDP accounting for 13% of the entire ASEAN region. In consideration of the financial tsunami of 2008, the economic growth rate over the past 10 years has averaged more than 5% per year, and its consumption power has remained strong. Regarding language and culture specificity, according to the National Development Committee's Chinese service market research, the total number of Chinese in ASEAN is about 29.02 million, or 4.67% of the population. The proportion of Malaysian Chinese in the total population is 24%. These numbers have become the springboard for international trials of Taiwan's cultural and creative industries.
