Bulgaria is in the Top 10 of European bicycle manufacturers

A total of 13.5 million bicycles were produced in the European Union in 2021, an increase of 11% compared to 2020, according to Eurostat data.

Bicycle production varies widely between EU Member States for which data are available. The most bicycles were produced in Portugal (2.9 million), Romania (2.5 million), Italy (1.9 million), Germany (1.4 million) and Poland (1.2 million).

Bulgaria is among the top 10 bicycle manufacturers in Europe with nearly 500,000 bicycles produced.

Cycling promotes personal health and well-being, in addition it is an economical way of transport in the urban environment and can replace the use of private cars, helping to reduce harmful emissions, notes Eurostat.

Exports of bicycles from the European Union also increased in 2021, but the bloc nevertheless remains a net importer of this type of vehicle.

Community countries exported €921 million worth of bicycles (electric and non-electric) to countries outside the EU, while importing bicycles from third countries were worth €1.896 billion.

Figures for 2021 show that the EU exported 1,487,700 conventional bicycles worth €433 million and imported 5,743,700 worth €1.046 billion. Compared to 2020, the number of exported non-electric bicycles increased by 16% and imports increased by 17%.

In 2021, 315,800 e-bikes worth €488 million were exported from the EU, while imports were 1,148,600 worth €849 million. Compared to 2020, the number of e-bike exports increased by 15% in 2021, while imports increased by 37%.

In 2021, the UK remains the main destination for non-electric bicycle exports from the EU (30% of the total volume to third countries), followed by Switzerland (21%), the United States (6%), Norway and Australia (both with 5%). Meanwhile, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are also the main destinations for electric bicycle exports from the EU (respectively 38% and 27% of total exports), followed by Norway (13%) and the United States (8%).

In 2021, non-EU imports of non-electric bicycles came mainly from Cambodia (27% of total non-EU bicycle imports), Taiwan (26%), China (10%), Bangladesh (8%) and Turkey (5% ). Meanwhile, EU imports of e-bikes come mainly from Taiwan (57% of total non-EU e-bike imports), followed by Switzerland (13%), Vietnam (11%), China (7%) and Turkey (6%).
