#18 University of Toronto (U of T)

#40 University of British Columbia (UBC)

#46 McGill University

#85 McMaster University

#111 University of Montreal

#118 University of Alberta

Canada’s top ranked university is the University of Toronto (U of T). U of T was ranked #21 globally in 2019, and has shown to have advanced in rank to #18 in 2023. U of T scored major points for its diversity and global reach, and for being at the forefront of innovation for over a century.

On the West Coast, the University of British Columbia (UBC) came in second, globally ranked at #40 in 2023, slipping in the rankings as it used to be #34 in 2019.

McGill University in Quebec came in third place, ranking #46 globally in 2023, having slipped in rankings as it stood at #31 in the world in 2019.

Ranked 4th university in Canada, McMaster University in Hamilton, landed in #85 globally in 2023. Further down the list is the University of Montreal (5th in Canada) in 111th place, and the University of Alberta (6th in Canada) in 118th.

The rankings looked at 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions and used 13 performance indicators to measure institutions’ performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

According to the rankings, the landscape of global higher education is shifting.

The US continues to dominate with 177 universities ranked overall, including seven in the world top ten, and 12 in the top 20, but its supremacy is being challenged by Asia as the number of US universities represented in the top 100 continues to fall, from 43 in 2018, to 34 this year. Harvard University retains its position as the US’s top ranked university in 2nd place.

Japan leads the Asian countries with a total of 117 universities ranked, followed by China with 95 and India with 75. University of Tokyo remains Japan’s top ranked university in 39th place.

Since 2004, Times Higher Education has been providing trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, academics, university leaders, governments and industry. It is the only global university league table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); industry income (knowledge transfer) and international outlook (staff, students and research). It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons. The overall list is accompanied by 11 subject-specific rankings.
