Poland’s Anwil to expand fertilizer production amid strong demand

Anwil, Poland’s second largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers, is going to increase its production capacity by approximately 50 percent after its recent investment scheduled to complete in June, 2023, a quick response to the strong market demand, according to media reports.
Anwil, which is part of the PKN Orlen Group, is the only company in Poland to produce suspension polyvinyl chloride. Only after Group Azoty, the company is also a significant manufacturer in this segment of the chemical market in Central and Eastern Europe. It announced at the beginning of October that it was continuing the construction of a nitrogen fertilizer production plant and will expand the product offer for Polish agriculture. As a result of the project, Anwil will strengthen its competitive position on the fertilizer market.
Recently, the fertilizer market has been difficult for farmers due to rising prices. Poland is a net importer of fertilizers, as much as 80 percent of its volume is imported. One of the main exporters of fertilizer to Poland is Russia, and as a result of the war in Ukraine and the political situation, the prices of this product have increased significantly.
According to the company, year to year imports of fertilizers to Poland have increased by 20 percent. A change in impot’s structure is also visible (the share of urea at the level of 68% vs. 2021 - 46%). Increased imports were recorded in August and September this year. Anwil has also announced that it will make efforts to ensure that the changes are as little noticeable as possible for Polish farmers, and above all, that they have guaranteed continuous access to Polish fertilizers.
