The Polish government will continue to stabilize energy and fuel prices, and prices will not be inflated, government spokesman Piotr Müller  said during a press conference on Wednesday.

The statement came after the basic 23 percent VAT is applied on fuel again after January 1, 2023. He stressed that the government was trying to stabilize prices on all energy carriers. "That is why we have introduced maximum prices for electricity and gas, we have frozen prices for households. We have changed lower VAT rates into a more favorable mechanism. We will continue to stabilize energy and fuel prices," he pointed out. On December 30, 2022, PKN Orlen, the country's biggest energy carrier, reduced wholesale fuel prices by approximately 12 percent, and thus the fuel retail prices did not change much.

"Poland has one of the lowest prices in the European Union," the spokesman said, adding that the measure of prices is also the amount of fuel that could be purchased for the minimum wage under the rule of PO and now.

The government spokesman was also asked about the accusations of the President of the Supreme Chamber of Control, Marian Banaś, regarding preventing the NIK auditors from carrying out an audit at PKN Orlen and intimidating the NIK auditors. In response, Müller stated that he "does not know" what the audit looked like, noting "even NIK must act within the limits and on the basis of the law."

"It's not like the Supreme Audit Office can do everything. It can do as much as its law allows in certain circumstances and a specific procedure, including notification. It is not a supervisor who can do everything," he said.

As the spokesperson pointed out, if there is a dispute over powers, it is up to the court to finally assess whether the procedures were conducted in accordance with the law.
