In response to a ruling by the European Union, Apple’s popular line of iPhones will be switching from a proprietary port to the universally recognized USB-C standard port. Along with the announcement of a new AirPods Pro case that will also support USB-C, this announcement completes Apple’s shift from proprietary connectors. Now, only one cord is required to charge everything from your MacBook, iPad, headphones, and phone. The move, while forced by the EU, ultimately aims to reduce e-waste and provide a universal connector for all electronic devices, greatly simplifying the charging and data transfer processes between multiple devices.

In addition, the announcement of the iPhone 15 Pro and its titanium exterior is expected to increase demand for titanium suppliers throughout Asia. Suppliers throughout China expect Apple’s use of titanium in its new flagship phone to increase other technology companies' use of the rare metal in their own flagship products. Because of the iPhone’s high status in America and indeed worldwide, the titanium industry is counting on large growth in the consumer electronics sector.

Alongside the iPhone, Apple also announced two new versions of its Apple Watch, the Series 9 and Ultra 2. Apple boasts that the new S9 System-on-Chip (SOC) can now handle Siri virtual assistant requests on devices, without the need for cloud computing. Additionally, the display module has been updated to support higher brightness levels with a range of 1-2000 nits. The Ultra 2 sees the same improvements as the Series 9 with the exception of the display, which can produce brighter images from 1-3000 nits.

One of the biggest announcements from this event was the reveal that all new Apple Watch models will be carbon neutral, from production to transit, to consumer usage, to end-of-life. Apple claims that, to reach carbon neutrality on Series 9, they will be investing in clean energy projects and nature-based solutions to offset carbon costs such as consumer electricity consumption. Apple also plans to employ sea-based shipping rather than air-based and will use more recycled materials than in previous models, even using completely recycled cobalt for the battery. This will result in increased demand for green electricity production components and aims to reduce overall carbon emissions.
