New natural gas deposit discovered in Carpathians, Naftogaz says

On November 17, 2023, Naftogaz, Ukraine's state-owned oil and gas conglomerate, announced a significant discovery: a new natural gas deposit in the Carpathians. This discovery could potentially boost Ukraine's domestic gas production, which is particularly crucial in the context of the ongoing war.
The discovery was made by Ukrgasvydobuvannya, Naftogaz's production branch, in a field in the western Zakarpattia Oblast, previously believed to be depleted, according to a statement published on the company's website.
The well produces gas at a rate of more than 200,000 meters squared per day, breaking a 20-year production record in western Ukraine, according to the statement and CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov.
The well, which reaches a depth of 1,600 meters, represents a significant stride in Naftogaz's efforts to increase domestic gas production. CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov expressed optimism about this development, viewing it as a promising sign for the future of Ukraine's gas production. He attributed this success to the well-coordinated efforts of his team and the application of modern technologies in the exploration and drilling processes.
Despite the challenges posed by Russia's full-scale war, which has inflicted millions in damages to Naftogaz's facilities, the company has remained committed to its goal of increasing domestic gas production. This discovery is particularly timely, as earlier in February, Chernyshov had projected that gas production would reach 19 billion cubic meters in 2023.
