For the format of fitness studios (including fight clubs, automated halls at home, etc.) with an average area of 100-150 sq. m. m now accounts for 80% of new discoveries in the fitness industry in Russia. Such data are provided in a study conducted by the FitnessData agency together with the Association of Fitness Industry Operators, platforms for automating the work of studios and the industry business community "Fitness Expert". In the course of the study, data from the Federal Tax Service were used, and 395 owners of fitness studios were interviewed. The industry association "National Fitness Community" agrees with these calculations.

By the beginning of November 2023, 6,400 small fitness facilities were operating in Russia (the total number, including large clubs, is about 9,000, according to the "National Fitness Community"). And now it is the fastest growing segment of the fitness market in quantitative terms, says FitnessData research. 450-500 such facilities are opened per year, by the end of January – October 2022, more than 400 studios have already been opened. By the end of 2023, the total turnover of this segment of the fitness industry may reach 28-29 billion rubles, and the market share of fitness services will exceed 14%, the analytical company calculated.

According to the estimates of the Association of Fitness Industry Operators, the turnover of the entire Russian market of fitness services in 2022 amounted to 181 billion rubles. In 2023, FitnessData predicts, this figure will grow to 200 billion rubles.

However, a significant part of small fitness industry facilities are closed during the first year of operation. Of all the studios that have opened in the last 12 months, 19% are no longer working. In January – December 2022, there were 29% of such closures, the study says.

"Such a high proportion of closures is largely due to the portrait of owners," the FitnessData study says. 59% of the surveyed owners of fitness studios have never been in business before, but 45% of them have coaching experience. Few entrepreneurs open a studio based on demand, rather choose a direction in the field of their interests, which they understand, comments the founder and CEO of the aggregator "Fitmost" Alexandra Gerasimova.

The average investment volume for the opening of a fitness studio in 2023, according to FitnessData research, is 5.3 million rubles. The money for the opening of the studio is mainly used by their own (51%),19% took money from a private investor,14% – a bank loan,10% borrowed from family and friends,3% managed to get state grants. The average revenue of a fitness studio in Russia is 4.3 million rubles a year,76% of studios earn less than 6 million rubles a year(500,000 rubles revenue per month). And only 41% of studios are profitable all year round, while more than a third are unprofitable in summer and have profits only in high seasons (autumn, spring), and 11% of studios are unprofitable throughout the year.

Today, the fitness business needs an accurate definition of the profile of potential consumers: to assess the willingness of consumers to pay for various types of services, to identify the motives and reasons for visiting fitness clubs, as well as why the population refuses such classes, according to the president of the National Fitness Community Elena Silina. The competition among fitness centers is very strong. Ultimately, logistics plays a role for the fitness studio: is it convenient for customers to get by various means of transport, is there parking, since the profitability of the studio depends on the location, she summarizes.
