1.06 million new passenger cars were sold in Russia last year, according to the data published by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Passport Industrial Consulting JSC (PPK; a joint venture of Autostat and electronic vehicle control systems). This final result gives a market growth of 62% compared to 2022.

The best-selling passenger car in 2023 was Lada Granta: 191,074 cars were sold, accounting for 18% of the market. The Chinese Haval Jolion was in 2nd place by a wide margin - 48,980 units (5% of the segment of new passenger cars). Lada Niva took the 3rd place (46,850 units), Lada Vesta took the 4th place (41,296 cars) and the Chinese Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max (40,992) took the 5th place. Each of the last three models accounted for 4% of the market last year. All the sales leaders, except Chery Tiggo, are produced in Russia.

In the light commercial vehicle segment, growth last year was 35%, sales reached 104,968 units, according to CPC data. GAZ Group's products occupied more than 50% of this segment, or 53,952 units. Another 18% belongs to UAZ, which owes 19,273 cars.

The most significant growth in 2023 was noted in the truck segment: sales amounted to 140,204 vehicles, which is 1.7 times more than in 2022. Of this number, 28,237 vehicles (one fifth of the market) are owned by Kamaz, which is generally comparable to the company's results over the past year. In 2nd place and further followed by Chinese brands: Sitrak (23,811 units), Shacman (19,983 cars) and FAW (12,565 units). The most popular truck last year was the Chinese Sitrak T7H tractor for the first time, 19,684 cars of this model were sold.

The growth in the bus segment was much more modest and amounted to 19% to 17,792 units. The most popular bus last year was the Vector Next GROOVE, which took 13% of the market with sales of 2,235 copies.

In total, 1.32 million units of vehicles were sold in the country in 2023, compared to 823,695 units in 2022, according to the CPC data. Almost half of all cars sold last year were produced in Russia.

The result of 2023 in terms of passenger car sales turned out to be slightly higher than the basic forecast of Autostat, which assumed market growth to 1.05 million units, but lower than the optimistic one, which expected to reach 1.09 million cars sold.

In 2024, the market will range from 900,000 to 1.48 million passenger cars, according to the agency's forecast released in December. The baseline scenario assumes a market growth of about a quarter relative to the values of 2023 to 1.3 million cars. The implementation of such a forecast will depend on the availability of effective demand from the population and government support for sales, noted Sergey Udalov, Executive Director of Autostat.

While working on the budget for the next three years (2024-2026), the government decided to increase the amount of financing for state programs to support demand for automotive equipment by 1.6 times compared with the initial values to 113 billion rubles (Vedomosti wrote about this on November 15, 2023). This will allow additional sales of more than 445,000 domestic cars, a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said at the time.

Sales growth in 2023 is largely due to the ultra-low base of 2022, says Sergey Burgazliev, an independent automotive consultant.

In February 2022, a special operation began in Ukraine, and then, due to the withdrawal of foreign automakers from the Russian market and difficulties with components from national manufacturers, sales of passenger cars fell back to the level of the mid-1990s and amounted to slightly more than 626,000 cars. At the same time, the share of Chinese passenger cars in the domestic market by the end of 2023, due to imports, almost doubled in annual terms to 58%, according to Autostat data. On the contrary, the share of Russian brands decreased from 43% to 33%.
