The former metalworking company "Liepājas metalurgs" in the coastal city of Lipava will be turned into an industrial park in Latvia, media recently reported.

Construction of the industrial park will soon begin, as a contract has been signed for the first 10 million euros. It is said that the investor interest in the area is high, with an estimate of more than 275 million euros in private investment and at least 1,500 new jobs to be created.

Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) office has entered into an agreement with the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFLA) for recovery and resilience mechanism financing in the amount of 10 million euros to start the first round of the project and continue implementing the idea of developing the Liepaja Industrial Park.

Right now, the entire area is covered with snow, and the wind is hitting the abandoned structures, such as giant piles of metal.  However, the most worrying part is other waste also lying there to be sorted out.

A heavy fuel oil pond and waste have been there for years, and there is also a lack of funds for the environmental cleanup of the territory of the former "Metalurgus," said Uldis Hmieļevskis, manager of the SEZ.

Expressing his worries, Hmielevskis pointed out that at least a step has been taken to start building the territory of the industrial park.

At the very beginning, electricity supplies will be organized, Hmielevskis explained, adding that companies entering the area will have the opportunity to connect to the elecric network.

The second most important task will be the construction of streets, as the area is of an impressive size, "like a town within the city."
