Sberbank imported laptops and tablets

Sber is testing about 50,000 laptops and tablets under its own brand in its branches. Shipments of devices from Asian factories started in 2022, and in 2023 the company imported a total of about 22,500 laptops and 18,000 tablets. This was told to Vedomosti by a source in the Russian electronics manufacturer.

A representative of the bank confirmed that the imported devices are used for internal needs. In the fourth quarter of 2022, Sber imported the first 9200 laptops from China, Vedomosti wrote in April 2023, citing GS Group data. The bank has ordered the production of laptops under its own brand in order to test their performance in the departments, explained a source close to several electronics manufacturers. In total, the bank needs about 100,000-150,000 devices to cover internal needs, he said.

In 2022-2023, the supply was carried out by the manufacturer of smart devices, LLC Salyutdevices (brand SberDevices) in partnership with the Chinese developer and electronics supplier Shanghai IP3 Information Technology Co., Ltd., notes a Vedomosti source close to one of the retailers.

Most of all, in 2023, Sber imported SDNB-14AP laptops from China, a Vedomosti source close to one of the retailers said. As stated in the description on the SberDevices website, this model is equipped with a quad-core AMD Risen 5 3700U processor, 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD with a screen diagonal of 14 inches. The other laptop models are similar modifications with more powerful SDNB-15A and SDNB-15AP and SDNB-M15AR processors.

In addition, one tablet model, the Tab SDT–11, was imported in 2023, the source says. It is equipped with an eight-core processor with a frequency of 2 GHz Unico With a T618 and a screen diagonal of 11 inches, runs on the Android 11 operating system, as indicated in the description on the website of the SberDevices.

Sber is also developing its own consumer electronics business, which already has smart TVs and smart home devices in its line, he recalled.

Most likely, Sber will replace Lenovo laptops and Apple tablets with its own and use them for basic office tasks or tasks of employees in departments, says Evgeny Perov, product director at Compass corporate messenger.

About 35,000 laptops and 18,000 tablets can cover about 20% of the bank's needs, the expert believes. According to open data, the number of all employees of Sberbank is 290,000 people and, most likely, every second employee needs a laptop or tablet to work. Indeed, these figures will allow equipping a fifth of employees with laptops and tablets, agrees EvApps developer Maxim Volkov.

A laptop and a tablet can be used to solve different tasks in a bank by disjoint groups of users, independent analyst Sergey Villanov believes. For example, a laptop is more likely to be needed by field employees who set up payment terminals, maintain an ATM network, and IT specialists who can work remotely, the expert lists. Tablets are used rather by "field" staff in offices for consultations, issuing bank cards, processing / issuing parcels of Sberbank Logistics, etc., he argues.

All PCs in the Sber infrastructure are managed remotely and the software is installed and updated centrally, Villanov knows. For example, at the end of 2022, Sbertransferred jobs in certain regions from Windows to Linux overnight, he says. The model range chosen by the bank is office models in the price range of 25,000–30,000 rubles, and the tablet has basic characteristics and could cost no more than 10,000-12,000 rubles at retail, the expert estimates.

The laptop models selected by the bank are fairly standard Chinese devices running operation system Linux, which have third–party program blockers, network access programs, and so on installed for the bank, says Rodion Trufanov, EvApps project manager. Sberbank employees may have pre-installed corporate applications and portals for working with clients on laptops and tablets, Perov admits. For example, applications such as MoyOffis, SberChat, SberPulse, and other domestic office software.

Most likely, the purpose of Sber is to acquire internal expertise and it is possible that in the future the bank may start selling devices at retail.
