Sales of tires for all types of vehicles in Russia in 2023 increased by 15% compared to 2022 and amounted to 55 million units. This follows from the calculations of Vedomosti based on data from the market survey prepared by the national digital marking system "Honest Mark".

The positive result is due to the low base of 2022 – then sellers raised prices, and buyers postponed purchases of new tires, explains a representative of CRPT, the operator of the Honest Sign system.

The total tire supply in Russia in 2023 amounted to 70.65 million tires compared to 64.7 million a year earlier. 58% of the supply, or 40.85 million tires (-5% by 2022), were provided by factories in Russia. Imports last year increased by 37% compared to the previous year, amounting to 29.8 million units, according to the review.

In the structure of local production, 75%, or 30.55 million units, are tires for passenger cars, 13% (5.12 million) are truck tires, 9% (3.68 million) are light trucks for medium–duty trucks, buses and other equipment. The remaining categories accounted for less than 1 million units produced in Russia. In the segment of Russian-made passenger tires, almost 12 million units each accounted for summer and winter studded tires.

Last year, 65% of imports also consisted of passenger tires. In quantitative terms, this is 19.22 million units. Another 3.5 million (12%) and 2.03 million (7%) were for truck and light truck tires, respectively. Most of the imported tires for passenger cars are summer tires (10,231 units).

The weighted average price of a passenger tire in 2023 turned out to be 5% lower than in 2022, and amounted to 6,142 rubles, it follows from the review. Truck tires, on the contrary, rose in price last year by 5% to 24,231 rubles per tire. The average cost of tires for agricultural machinery remained approximately at the level of last year (14,600 rubles), and tires for construction and mining equipment rose in price by almost 2 times to 56,684 rubles.

The dynamics of prices for mountain and special tires is associated with the lengthening of the logistics chains for the supply of these products to the Russian Federation, explains the representative of the CRPT. The cost of tires for passenger cars, according to him, varied depending on the seasonality: summer tires fell in price against the background of a high base in 2023 and the entry of new Asian brands into the market. Prices for winter tires have tightened due to an increase in demand for it, which was due to new restrictions on the operation of unseasonable tires and refurbished tires, the source notes.

After the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions due to ITS presence in Ukraine, foreign companies began to withdraw from assets in the tire business in Russia. In March 2023, Finnish Nokian Tyres sold Tatneft a plant in Vsevolozhsk, Leningrad Region, with a capacity of 17 million tires per year. The transaction amount amounted to 400 million euros. At the same time, French Michelin sold its plant in the Moscow region to the distributor Power International Tires. In May, Armen Sargsyan's S8 Capital Group bought the German Continental plant (4 million tires per year), and in December – the Bridgestone plant in Ulyanovsk.

The products of foreign manufacturers Nokian, Pirelli, Yokohama, Bridgestone and Michelin became the most popular among Russians in the 2023/24 winter season, according to Avito data. At the same time, sales of the Chinese Triangle and Sailun brands increased by 63 and 41% year-on-year, respectively.

At the beginning of the current winter season, sales of the corresponding tires at Avito jumped 1.5 times compared to the same period last year. In 40% of cases, buyers chose new tires, according to the company's data. In total, in the first decade of November 2023, more than 2.2 million ads for the sale of tires for passenger cars were posted on the online platform, of which about 849,000 were new tires. The average purchase receipt for a new winter set of four tires at that time was 27,300 rubles, used – 18,700 rubles.

In 2023, against the background of the suspension of production by global brands, a lot of Chinese tires were imported to Russia and because of this there was a surplus in the market, explains Sergey Burgazliev, an independent automotive consultant. Most likely, in 2024, the factories of foreign concerns will be restarted by new owners under other brands and the size of imports will decrease, the expert predicts.
