The e-bike is an important driver for the bicycle industry. Last year, sales of e-bikes even accounted for more than 80 percent of the turnover of the entire bicycle industry, according to the latest figures. An electric two-wheeler would cost an average of 2,574 euros in 2023, 95 euros more than the year before.

The entire bicycle industry saw turnover further stabilize at 1.4 billion euros, according to research by Royal RAI Association and Bovag, carried out by GFK. After the exceptional demand for two-wheelers during the corona pandemic, this 'healthy' market has now calmed down again, the associations note. Ultimately, 804,000 new bicycles were sold in 2023, slightly less than the 855,000 in 2022.

The e-bike has a market share of more than 56 percent. A total of 1.17 billion euros worth of electric bicycles were sold. The dominant position of the e-bike has ensured that a third of all new bicycles sold now have an average price tag of more than 2,400 euros.

Evolution in bicycle market

"The market had to slow down somewhat after the sales boom during the corona period, but demand remained at the same level on balance," notes Huub Lamers, chairman of the Cycling section of the RAI Association. According to Lamers, interest in bicycles in general and comfortable e-bikes in particular is and remains as great as ever.

There is still a lot of potential in the coming years when it comes to commuting, because about half of employees do not yet have access to a company bicycle. Lamers: "We therefore continue to work for an even better and more attractive lease bicycle scheme that actually encourages people to cycle to work."

According to Maarten Akkers, chairman of Bovag Bicycle Companies, we are currently witnessing an evolution in the bicycle market. “We see a shift in consumer needs and preferences. The bicycle, e-bikes in particular, offers a flexible, sustainable and healthy alternative for short to medium distances, while the car still plays its role for longer journeys or when greater loading capacity is required.”

Sales by segment

When looking at the popularity of the various bicycle segments, it appears that - leaving the e-bike aside - just under a quarter of consumers (22%) still prefer a traditional touring or city bicycle. This is followed by the children's bicycle (10%), the MTB (4%) and the sports hybrid and racing bicycles (2%). (source: Royal RAI Association)
